ca. 1896 Joseph's brother August, 16 years old, plays cornet at Holyoke Opera House. "The conductor of the opera house in Holyoke needed a cornet player to follow the lead singer the day of the opening for new opera. The conductor went to a local music teacher and asked if he knew anybody. The music teacher said he had just the person. They waited at the silk mills in Holyoke for August to finish work. When the conductor saw August he didn't know what this boy could do, and the lead singer just about fell over. August couldn't read music, but he could play any song after hearing it just once. So, someone played the song for him and that night he played the lead without missing a note." quote from Antoinette Dietrich 1901-1988
